Farms
for Life acts as a bridge for local farmers to distribute fresh produce
to people who don't have access to healthy foodMission Statement
Farms
for Life is dedicated to serving people in transition, supporting local
farmers, and protecting agricultural lands. We will achieve this by
providing quality produce from local farms and nutritional education to
people in transitional programs through the agencies that serve them.
Who We Are
|
Farms for Life is a non-profit organization created by a group
of local farmers and like-minded people concerned about the lack of
access that certain populations have to healthy, local produce. Our
goal is to provide high quality, fresh food to people in transition via
various programs, shelters, and facilities in King County.
Farms for Life is an all volunteer
staff. We depend on donations and contributions to run our programs. In
2011, we provided enough fresh produce to serve the vegetable component
in more than 26,000 meals at our affiliated agencies: YouthCare, New
Beginnings, Orion Center, Elizabeth Gregory Home, Hopelink, and
the Maltby Food Bank.

Healthy produce from a local farm is distributed free of charge by Farms for Life.
|
Residents of YouthCare's programs learn to cook healthy meals using
produce freshly picked by local farmers donated by Farms for Life.
| |
In addition to delivering fresh produce,
Farms for Life is dedicated to educating the people we serve about the
benefits of eating local, fresh food and teaching them how to prepare
simple, nutritious meals. We believe that this educational approach is
key in promoting lasting health and well being.
|
Farms for Life purchases fresh produce
directly from local, sustainable farms at specially negotiated, reduced
prices. This creates a constant and predictable demand, which helps our
local farmers maintain their livelihoods in an increasingly competitive
market.
